Can You See Me Now? The Future of Video Chat
Can it be as easy as moving the camera from the “back” to the “front”? Probably, in the case of Video chat. I predict this will take off in a big way as one of those “why didn’t we think of this sooner” moments. However, I still need the camera on the “back” too - I assume the phone manufacturers will figure that out quickly. ..Brian.. ...

Entner: The three pillars of AT&T's new data...
Roger Entner makes some good distinctions about pricing of data plans and how AT&T really is taking the industry from demand generation to demand management. It looks like some iphone users (the ones I expect are the heaviest data users in the AT&T world) may get a break on their bill in the short term, but I wonder if anyone has done analysis of the new AT&T plan to see when the...

I believe in this! I find working at home where I am free to take a quick break I am more productive and less tired at the end of the day. 20 pushups, a run, etc when I get antsy makes a huge difference. This article was passed on to me by Gian Zoppo - thanks Gian. From: http://ping.fm/it9VB

near-term future of Enterprise software
Mark Lowenstein writes an interesting article on the future of enterprise software. What struck me the most is that there is alot of software needed to make wireless for the enterprise really make an impact. Consumer apps are leading the way - but there is alot of catch up to do in the enterprise. What is the next “application” that will be considered a “home run” vs....

Fedegration - one big piece of information...
Mark Lewis writes about “Fedegration” which he defines as “leverage data and content across applications for new purposes (new applications, analytics, governance) and still leave it (and manage it) in place for the existing application.”. Pretty good definition and a good example of why information consulting is going to be important in future years for our large clients....

AT&T & Verizon’s Future Is in Your Fridge
This article by Stacey Higginbotham points out some interesting aspects of the future wireless world. What is the value of machine to machine communication to the large carriers? Probably big value. How will it evolve with respect to cellular vs. WiFi? Probably a mix or a hybrid cellular/wifi model similar to that used by the iphone. who will pay for the communication? Kindle pays (e.g., you...

IBM Turns to Software as It Reboots - WSJ.com
Looks like the general belief is that managing data and information is going to be a big growth area for the next few years. Interesting that “software” is the focus in this article - but the message behind the message really is that alot of software is going to be needed (tools) that manage data and allow people at various levels to interpret and act on the data. That is going to be...

Account manager excellence - 6 key points
After almost 15 years in consulting I have learned a few things.  If these are new, great - you learn something.  if these are familiar and you are practicing them already, great - it is good to be reminded of these from time to time.  1. Maintain your integrity with your clients.  Don’t try to pull one over on anyone.  The trust you lose if you are found out is hugely damaging. A good...

Kirby Turner loves the ipad, and his experiment revealed something that is intuitive if you think about it - the ipad is not a very integrated device from an application perspective. Makes sense, right? - all the apps are written by different authors with essentially no thought about others! It is about producing a useful “function” and getting it to the masses. :-) What will...

U.S. Economy Adds 290,000 Jobs - WSJ.com - but...
The headline will probably make the stock market go up today - but read the fine print (the article) and you see that this is not the whole story. Many jobs were added for census work and those jobs will go away in the 2nd half of this year. So really not much change… and the unemployment rate rose. One positive though - we all want to be positive after 2 years of downward sloping …...

Motivate without spending millions - Apr. 5, 2010
Article written by Telis Demos promoting small rewards all the time, randomly. I have come to believe this is one of the most effective means of rewarding workers, partly because I feel really good when I get a surprise reward and partly because I have seen the look on the face of the employees who have received them. I give out what I call an “extra mile” award - small reward, maybe...

Motorola Ready to Make Acquisitions After Split,...
Sue Marek on Fiercewireless blogged today about this - I guess I am behind on my news as i had not heard Motorola is splitting. Can those that know Motorola better as a corporate structure comment on how they see this split improving the company(s) over all? From:...

Mobile broadband - can we get more acronyms?
Can we get more acronyms in telecom today? read this definition of mobile broadband - no wonder consumers are so confused about phone, internet technology. super fast fiber network by Google
Interesting development from Google today - I would guess it is a play to get the big carriers to change their ways faster. Getting into the fiber business is pretty different from where they have been, and given the recent track record with their mobile phone I think they are pushing the envelope and trying to be too much too soon. However, anything that can make our network faster will help us...

Mobile advertising
Chetan Sharma talks about mobile advertising - I’m reading (listening actually) the book “what would Google do” (WWGD) and they suggest Google sees mobile advertising even bigger than online advertising. It makes sense - alot more devices and ways to get advertising to the people - and getting the people is the key. Mobile platforms are definitely closer to the person. From:...

Mozy for Backup
My company, EMC, is offering Mozy for the holidays. Backup software for your home computer… and it really works. I have it on my home PC and had a disk crash - I was able to recover all my files without an issue. As we all know, the challenge of these systems is typically that you can’t recover when you want to - this really did work for me. Check it out at http://ping.fm/MMRWL.

How do Consultants stay ahead of the game?

Client Meetings
It always amazes me that so many people want to go into a client meeting presenting the “stuff” that they prepare with no thinking about what the dialog should be. I maintain that we make the most progress with the client when we listen at least as much as we talk. Sales trainers such as Mahan Khalsa have influenced my thinking on this alot and really have the right approach.

One of the best management tips I have learned is give people responsibility and trust, but check the details to make sure. I thought I learned it - and just relearned it recently. However, I received a call a couple weeks ago from the...

Why don't I share the wealth of consulting?
After reading Gary Vaynerchuk’s book, I thought about my passions and realized that mountain Unicycling is fun but not what I want to do with my life! :-) My ability to identify the make and model of car by seeing the headlights is not going to help many people, and my love of trying new sports has a short halflife given I am 50.
